Lap 287: As the green comes out again, Harvick has moved into ninth place. There are 80 laps to go.

Lap 283: The caution's back out for Edwards' mishap.

Lap 282: Carl Edwards slaps the wall, forcing Harvick to go low on the track to avoid.

Lap 281: Harvick is 11th when the green flag comes back.

Lap 277: Harvick comes in for four tires and fuel. The stop lasts 14.8 seconds.

Lap 275: Moments after Kyle Busch slapped the wall in turn one, Jamie McMurray pops a tire to bring out the 12th caution of the night.

Lap 271: Tony Stewart drops Harvick to seventh place.

Lap 267: With 100 laps to go, Harvick is still in sixth, 10.22 seconds behind leader Greg Biffle.

Lap 260: Kyle Busch's brush with the wall has allowed Harvick to open up a gap and maintain sixth place since the restart.

Lap 253: The green flag drops again with Harvick sixth in the running order.

Lap 252: Crew chief Gil Martin tells Harvick that everyone will have to make one more stop, maybe two.

Lap 223: Harvick brings the Shell Chevrolet onto pit road for its seventh stop of the night. The stop lasts 15.2 seconds.

Lap 222: The caution comes back out when Clint Bowyer, Harvick's Richard Childress Racing teammate, crashes off of turn two.

Lap 219: Harvick's fuel-only strategy has moved him to sixth on the restart.

Lap 217: Harvick asks if anybody was hit on pit road when Johnson spun. Fortunately, Johnson didn't hit anyone.

Lap 216: Harvick makes contact with Jimmie Johnson as they come onto pit road. Johnson does a half-spin, but Harvick is able to continue. He takes fuel only on his stop, which lasts seven seconds flat.

Lap 214: Kurt Busch spins off turn two. Harvick checks up and drives through the smoke unscathed. The caution's out.

Lap 202: Harvick has not led a lap so far tonight. He hasn't led a lap since March 1 at Las Vegas, the third race of the year.

Lap 201: Harvick takes the restart in 17th place.

Lap 196: David Ragan has spun again, bringing out another yellow flag. Harvick says he's too loose in the turns.

Lap 192: Harvick thinks a tire is going down, but he's told that they all look OK.

Lap 189: Harvick is 15th when the race goes back to green.

Lap 188: Brakes still seem to be a problem for Harvick. He's told to keep his fans on.

Lap 186: Harvick stops for four tires and fuel. It takes his crew 14.8 to cycle through its service.

Lap 185: David Ragan's spin brings out the race's seventh caution. Harvick says that he's loose through turns one and two, and OK at the other end of the track.

Lap 184: At the halfway point of the race, Harvick is 12th, 12.88 seconds behind leader Greg Biffle. That's about half a lap on the race track.

Lap 178: Harvick's spotter tells him that other drivers are reporting that there's better grip lower in the corners.

Lap 173: Joey Logano brushes the wall, just in front of Harvick. Both are able to maintain control.

Lap 169: Paul Menard appears to be holding up a pack of cars that includes Harvick.

Lap 165: When the green flag falls again, Harvick is running 11th.

Lap 162: Harvick comes onto pit road for tires and fuel. The stop lasts 14.8 seconds.

Lap 160: The caution comes out for Denny Hamlin's spin between turns one and two. As soon as the yellow is displayed, Harvick and crew chief Gil Martin start discussing the changes they'll make during their stop.

Lap 149: Harvick says the air-pressure adjustments made on the last stop haven't worked. He adds that the car is "terrible" in traffic.

Lap 145: Harvick has fallen to 14th, 16.67 seconds behind leader Greg Biffle.

Lap 133: Harvick's spotter tells him to move away from the wall coming down the straightaway so he can assess the damage. He doesn't think the damage is major.

Lap 132: Harvick says he might have messed up a fender making contact with another car. Crew chief Gil Martin says the crew will pull it back out on the next pit stop.

Lap 123: Harvick is 11th when the green flag comes back out.

Lap 120: The Shell crew bolts on four fresh tires and adds fuel during Harvick's pit stop. Harvick's third stop of the night lasts 16.2 seconds.

Lap 119: Harvick says that the only thing that worries him is his brakes, which he says are wobbling and fading.

Lap 118: Sam Hornish Jr. spins, bringing out the fifth caution period of the night.

Lap 117: Martin Truex Jr. has moved into the lead. Harvick trails him by 12.23 seconds.

Lap 110: Harvick's last-lap speed is 164.320 mph.

Lap 105: First-place Kasey Kahne has an advantage of about half a lap over Harvick, who is still in 10th. On the clock, Kahne's lead is 13.26 seconds.

Lap 101: Harvick has moved back into 10th.

Lap 95: David Reutimann moves past Harvick to re-take 10th in the running order.

Lap 93: Harvick breaks into the top 10.

Lap 92: Harvick is now 11th, about three-tenths of a second behind 10th-place Kyle Busch.

Lap 85: The green flag falls again with Harvick in 12th. Greg Biffle holds the 11th spot.

Lap 83: Harvick comments on the mess on the track left by Waltrip's mishap. He's then told that there are 284 laps left, to which Harvick replies, "Just around the corner."

Lap 82: All of the leaders pit. Harvick takes on four tires and fuel. The service is completed in 15.4 seconds.

Lap 74: Michael Waltrip brings out the caution when his car apparently loses an engine. It's briefly in flames.

Lap 71: Harvick is now chasing 11th-place Tony Stewart, who holds about a two-second advantage over the Shell Chevrolet.

Lap 69: Harvick says that his car is not bad. Its front tires, however, could be a little bit better off the turns.

Lap 67: Harvick finally gets past Logano for 12th.

Lap 65: Logano is still keeping Harvick at bay. They're running 12th and 13th, respectively.

Lap 56: In six laps, Harvick has lost nearly two seconds to leader Ryan Newman. He runs 13th, just behind Joey Logano.

Lap 51: Harvick's spotter tells him that he's developed a nice rhythm on the track.

Lap 50: When leader Ryan Newman is at the start-finish line, Harvick is in the middle of turns three and four. Harvick trails Newman by 7.06 seconds.

Lap 41: Harvick is 5.18 seconds behind leader Ryan Newman. His spotter tells Harvick that he just ran his best lap of the night. He runs the lap at a speed of 167.231 mph.

Lap 37: The green comes back out with Harvick running 12th.

Lap 32: Harvick says that he's having a little bit of a problem coming off both corners.

Lap 31: Another yellow flag falls for an accident involving Casey Mears and A.J. Allmendinger.

Lap 29: Harvick is in heavy traffic. He's running 13th.

Lap 24: Harvick takes the restart in 15th position.

Lap 22: Harvick takes gas only on his stop. The stop is completed in just 6.4 seconds.

Lap 21: The yellow flag is out for Michael Waltrip's spin in turn four.

Lap 17: Harvick, still running 24th, trails leader Jeff Gordon by 13. 79 seconds.

Lap 8: The green flag comes back out, with Harvick in 24th place.

Lap 6: Harvick stays out during the caution.

Lap 4: The caution comes out for an accident involving Max Papis and Scott Speed.

7:37 p.m.: The green flag is out.

7:36 p.m.: Just before the green flag comes out, team owner Richard Childress wishes Harvick good luck.

7:32 p.m.: The field rolls off pit road.

7:09 p.m. EST: Harvick qualified 24th for the Southern 500. His last top-10 starting spot this season came at the March 8 event at Atlanta, where he started rolled off the grid 10th. Harvick has three top-10 starts at Darlington, the last coming in May 2007.

Pre-Race Notes: Kevin Harvick will drive Richard Childress Racing's chassis No. 266 during the Southern 500 at Darlington. The car was built during the off-season. In its only other appearance this season, Casey Mears drove the car to a 24th-place showing at California.

In 12 Cup starts at Darlington, Harvick's best finish is a second in August 2003. Harvick has completed 3,795 of a possible 4,111 laps in his 12 Cup races at Darlington. His best finish in Darlington's last five Cup races is 14th.

Team owner Richard Childress has eight wins at Darlington, all of them with Dale Earnhardt behind the wheel.
